Why physical activity is your best tool to create inclusive classrooms for students with ADHD.

-by Dr. Tim Grivois, Executive Director

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed and well-studied neurological conditions. However, even when a child is diagnosed with ADHD, families often don’t seek medical treatment. Also, families that work with a physician to include medicine as part of their child’s treatment often struggle to fill prescriptions when medicine is in short supply.

This means that all of us, school leaders, special educators, classroom teachers, and paraprofessionals, need to be equipped with a broad range of evidence-based, classroom-possible interventions that

  • do not rely on a pharmacy for success, and
  • can begin immediately

Of these, physical activity is the best intervention, with the most evidence of success in supporting the social, emotional, and academic achievement of students with ADHD.

Physical Activity: A Powerful (and fun) Tool for Supporting Students with ADHD is a 30-minute, self-paced course that reviews the evidence for physical activity as a school-based intervention for ADHD, explores implications for our practice, and helps participants get started immediately. And it’s free!

When we add physical activity to our learning spaces, we can expect higher student engagement, more time on task, fewer unexpected behaviors, and an overall warmer, happier place for everyone to learn.

Our ADHD content is among our most requested sessions, and now you can access one of the most important parts of the learning for free.
