Active Supervision

Active supervision is the most effective–and important–strategy for creating safe schools. Make sure your school’s supervision is “lifeguard level.”

Available Online, Self-paced, and In-person.

The most effective strategy to prevent unexpected behaviors and ensure student safety is “lifeguard level” supervision. When students know that we see them and that we will respond when they need us, they are able to make better choices about how they spend their time. Better, how?

  1. Better because everyone knows that adults will enforce rules when necessary, and
  2. Better because they can make choices about how to play and learn, rather than how to seek or avoid danger.

When schools train personnel in active supervision, the results are:

  1. Safer playgrounds, lunchrooms, arrival/dismissal periods, hallways, and fieldtrips,
  2. Dramatically reduced disciplinary referrals, and
  3. Done right, positive relationships between students and school adults.

Active Supervision is the perfect course for paraprofessionals, school monitors, teachers new to the profession, and anyone else responsible for supervising students in both classrooms and non-classroom settings. Used as a prevention tool, training personnel in active supervision can also address persistent problem areas in behavior/discipline data. Contact us about Active Supervision Training if you have ever seen:

  • Supervisors on a cell phone instead of watching students.
  • Students in areas that they should never have been allowed to reach.
  • Unexpected behaviors crop up in places that adults often aren’t.

This course is also an outstanding opportunity for mid-year or new hires. In this course, you will learn what “Move/Scan/Interact” means and how to put those skills into practice. You’ll also learn how to transform the physical environment to make active supervision more effective.
