Union strong: Ali Pierce on advocacy, leadership, and showing up for educators.

In a recent conversation with Ali Pierce, treasurer of the Marina Education Association (MEA), we explored the importance of union involvement for educators. Ali’s journey from skeptical newcomer to passionate union leader offers valuable insights into the role of unions in supporting teachers and improving education.

Q: How did you first get involved with your union?

A: “I was initially skeptical about joining the union,” Ali admits. “But a challenging situation with a colleague made me realize the importance of union protection. From there, I quickly became more involved, organizing events and participating in leadership programs.”

Q: What challenges do teachers face in Arizona, and how does the union help?

A: “As a right-to-work state, Arizona faces significant funding challenges for schools. The union provides a crucial voice and support system for teachers. We’re particularly active during election seasons, as local elections greatly impact education policies.”

Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected teachers and union involvement?

A: “The pandemic intensified expectations for teachers to be selfless. We were suddenly ‘heroes,’ which reinforced the idea that we should sacrifice everything for our students. The union became even more important in advocating for our needs and safety during this time.”

Q: What benefits does union membership offer?

A: “Beyond protection and advocacy, union dues provide liability insurance and professional development opportunities. For secondary education teachers like myself, who often have limited resources, the union offers valuable continuous education and a sense of community.”

Q: How does union involvement impact teacher compensation and professionalism?

A: “In districts with strong unions, we see better compensation and more respect for teachers as professionals. The union plays a crucial role in advocating for fair pay and better working conditions, which directly impacts teacher morale and job satisfaction.”

Q: What would you say to teachers considering union involvement?

A: “Being part of a union gives you a seat at the table. It’s about collective action and addressing systemic issues that affect our profession. Whether it’s through leadership roles or simply being an active member, union involvement allows us to shape policies that benefit both teachers and students.”

As someone who routinely talks about self-care as meaning more than a latte, I understood that for Ali, her involvement in her union offers more than just protection; it provides a pathway for teachers to take direct action on the systemic issues affecting their profession. For educators looking to address the challenges of moral injury, compassion fatigue, and burnout, active participation in their union can be a powerful step towards positive change.

Union involvement offers educators a platform to advocate for fair treatment, professional growth, and systemic change. Whether you’re new to teaching or a seasoned educator, joining your local union or taking on a leadership role can make a significant difference for yourself and your community.
