If you’ve ever asked me about PBIS Rewards, you probably noticed I don’t use the word “rewards.” That’s not just semantics—it’s about how we frame what matters in our schools. At TGS Educational Consulting, we support schools in building PBIS Recognition Systems that are more than sticker charts and point trackers. What we build together is a system that reflects your school’s values, builds community, and strengthens relationships.
What Is a PBIS Recognition System?
A PBIS Recognition System is how a school chooses to see and celebrate students who are showing up, doing their best, and helping their community thrive. It’s part of Tier 1 support—something all students experience, and a daily reminder of what your school stands for.
When we design recognition systems with schools, we start by identifying your core values. Not a generic list—your values. Then we create simple, clear ways to notice and name when students act in alignment with those values. The goal is not to get kids to behave but to help them feel seen and connected.
Why We Say “Recognition” Instead of “PBIS Rewards”
“Rewards” implies that we’re paying students to do what they’re told. That might work for short-term compliance, but it doesn’t build belonging. Recognition is different. It says, “We noticed you living our values, and we appreciate you.”
Recognition systems are relational, not transactional. They remind students that who they are matters, not just what they do. And when recognition is tied to values, it becomes a tool for shaping school culture in authentic, sustainable ways.
What a Recognition System Looks Like in Practice
– Clear language: Staff use consistent, values-based language to recognize students.
– Simple tools: Whether it’s paper tickets or a digital app, the focus is on ease of use and consistency.
– Schoolwide visibility: Recognitions are shared during announcements, posted in hallways, or celebrated in class meetings.
– Student voice: Students help design how recognition happens and even nominate peers.
Does It Work?
Yes—but only when it’s real. Recognition systems work when they reflect the actual culture of the school and when every adult on campus sees recognition not as a task, but as a relationship-building practice. And yes, you can still have fun with raffles, privileges, and events. But they should feel like community celebrations, not currency exchanges.
Let’s Build One That Fits Your School
At TGS Educational Consulting, we help schools design PBIS Recognition Systems that feel natural, doable, and meaningful. If your current system feels like a chore or doesn’t reflect who your students really are, let’s talk.
Recognition isn’t about points. It’s about people.
Schedule a call to learn more and start building a recognition system your school community will actually love. It’s free, and we’re happy to support any educator in any role who helps children and youth learn and grow.
