PBIS Check-In/Check-Out Script: More Than a Routine—It’s a Relationship

By Dr. Timothy Grivois, Executive Director

If you’re looking for a PBIS Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) script that actually helps students grow—not just comply—you’re in the right place.

At TGS Educational Consulting, we believe that CICO isn’t just a behavior intervention—it’s a daily opportunity to connect with students and remind them that they matter. That’s why we created our CICO Daily Conversation Script—a resource designed to help educators make every check-in and check-out count.

What Is a PBIS CICO Script?

A PBIS Check-In/Check-Out script provides a structure for brief, purposeful conversations between a student and a caring adult at the start and end of the school day. These moments aren’t just about tracking points—they’re about helping students plan for success, reflect on challenges, and feel seen and supported.

What Makes Our Script Different?

Most CICO programs focus heavily on tracking data and issuing scores. Ours focuses on conversation. The script includes prompts that guide adults through four key parts of a relational CICO check-in:

 Morning Check-In

– Name the behavior: “Today you’re focusing on showing kindness.”

– Practice and celebrate: “Let’s act it out real quick—this might feel silly, but let’s have fun with it.”

– Predict challenges: “What might be tough today?”

– Make a plan: “If that happens, what could you do instead?”

 Afternoon Check-Out

– Check the day’s tone: “Was today tricky, mixed, or great?”

– Celebrate effort: “I’m proud of you. Let’s do a high five or a victory dance.”

– Analyze obstacles or successes: “What got in your way?” or “What worked well today?”

– Set up tomorrow: “What’s your plan for making tomorrow even better?”

Why Scripts Matter in PBIS

Scripts help educators stay consistent and authentic. Our CICO script ensures that every interaction reinforces school values, supports student reflection, and builds the adult-student relationship at the heart of any effective behavior intervention.

Plus, the language is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and developmentally appropriate—making it useful from elementary through high school.
